If you’re in Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival (and many people like us, go there for just a brief day or two) you may find yourself with very little time to look around Edinburgh AND go to shows as well. Here is a walk that takes in a brisk walk and takes you to some great places in a short time. Starting at the Walverley Railway station you can look across the road to Princess Street – the major shopping area, but no time for that, yet. Turn right up Princess street until you reach North Bridge and then turn right again. Walk up North Bridge – look over the bridge to the left and see Calton Hill on your extreme left. Keep going until you reach the High Street – turn right into the Royal Mile and walk up the hill, enjoying the Fringe street theatre and continue up Lawnmarket (but not right up to the castle) and then veer left down the hill at the side of the castle mound and walk down Johnson Terrace until you reach a path and steps down the hill behind the castle. Down the steps and continue into Grassmarket. Through Grassmarket take a left turn up the hill to join the Royal Mile again at Lawnmarket  turn right and then turn left over George IV Bridge, across down to Bank  Street turn left along north Bank Street and cross the road across from the marvellous building of Church of Scotland Assembly Hall (Mound Place) and  down the mound past the Scottish Galleries to join Princess Street again. You’ll have had a good walk – but seen part of the Old Town of the most beautiful city in Europe, too. (Not that I’m biased).
