The various walks around the community woodland at Clowbridge Reservoir are a cornucopia of delights. Take the Rawtenstall Road out of Burnley, and just past the summit of the hill there is a left turn into a lane (Limy Lane) at Clowbridge. If you arrive at the Dunnockshaw sign you’ve gone too far. You can park down the lane (a dead end) and look at the board showing all the walks around rhis beautiful area. We chose the Whelow Trail (at 7.5 km the longest walk) which takes you past the reservoir, up the hill and past the Pack Horse Trail that used to link the Ribble Valley to Rochdale for the distribution of wool, coal and limestone (hence Limy Lane). At the beginning of the walk there are many species of wild flowers in profusion, which give way to the sedges and grasses of the moors as we climbed. At a cross we turned right (these are signposted but not easy to follow) and we saw a number of species of birds amongst them a hawk and a skylark. It’s a beautiful landscape only slightly marred by the electricity pylons. After the turn we climbed again and then turned left again down the hill and past the plantation of trees in a circular walk back to the car.
