You can get to Higherford from Gisburn, or from Colne or Nelson – its easy to get to off the M65. From Nelson go past Nelson & Colne College and over the bridge through Barrowford. At the George and Dragon (Toll House on the other side of the road) turn right over the bridge and turn immediately left and park in the Heritage Centre Car Park (have a meal or drink in the Heritage Centre when you come back).

Then go back over the bridge and walk along the road up to Higherford. At the Bridge go straight on past the old Pack Horse Bridge keeping at the side of the river. Walk past the houses and keep to the path along the riverside. It is now fenced in, but when I was a child the fields ran down to the river, but it is still a beautiful walk – in June you can see the huge number of brambles growing – its going to be a bumper blackberry harvest along this bank in autumn but its still worth a visit to see the wildlife and birds now. Keep along the path and eventually the path crosses a bridge. The track up the hill will lead you to Blacko, but the path continuing along the river (but on the other side) is the path (part of the Pendle Witches trail) to the Water Meetings – site of my childhood picnics. Now the path allows you access down to the rives, and the vista opens out – what a lovely place for a family picnic.
