Not just a nice healthy walk, but a good way to see lots of interesting places. Start from Green Park station and then go into Green Park.  Take the big tarmaced path that  leads towards the Mall and Buckingham Palace. You’ll go past Lancaster house on your left. Then go right into the Mall just opposite the large Queen Victoria Memorial. You’ll see Buckingham Palace on your right. Two photo opportunities. Now turn your back on the Palace and go towards the Mall – which leads down to Trafalgar Square crossing the road carefully to reach St James’s Park. Instead of walking up the Mall, take the first path on the right into St James’s Park. You’ll go towards the lake and see the ducks – and the many squirrels that infest the park. They’re pretty tame so your children will like this bit. Walk along the path with the lake on your right. When you get to the bridge halfway along the lake, cross the lake and turn left and at the end of the lake walk to the Guards Monument  and nearby Horse Guards Parade – and walk through the Horse Guards past the mounted sentries into Whitehall.  You CAN turn right along Whitehall to Downing Street (you can’t  really see number 10 any more because of security), either skip this, or turn back along Whitehall towards Horse Guards to Trafalgar Square
