Grange over Sands in Cumbria is a wonderful place to stay if you want to relax – or if you want to take part in outdoor activities – it is very near to the Lake District but also is a good place for easy, pleasant walking.

Start from the ornamental gardens and walk down towards the station – but turn left into Windermere road, just before the garage. Walk along until you reach a signpost to “Hampsfell”. Follow this path through Eggerslack Wood keep climbing. After a long climb (you may want to sit down and have a drink and enjoy the view if you are unused to walking uphill) the path finally turns left over a stile onto open fell. Take the signposted track “Public footpath to Hampsfell”. This is a rutted track and leads away from the wall – bear right along the rutted track until you meet a Y junction and then bear left and then climb for about a quarter of a mile. There is a stone stile to your right in the wall – go through the stile and follow the yellow arrows to the Hospice. Hamspfell Hospice is 750’ high and there are super views. This was one of my father’s favourite walks when he lived in Grange, and he never tired of it.
